Title   Somerset Medical Center Offers Senior-Focused Programs Throughout July And August

Somerset Medical Center�s Senior Advantage in Life (SAIL) Program is offering a full slate of health education programs throughout July and August geared especially for people 60 and older. Topics range from cardiac care and arthritis to saving money on prescription drugs and communicating with your adult children. The Arthritis Foundation�s �People With Arthritis Can Exercise� (PACE) Program. If you have arthritis, you don�t need to put up with swollen, painful joints. Exercise can help improve joint flexibility, range of motion and muscle strength. Kathy Geller, a certified PACE instructor, will teach seated exercises for people with arthritis in this four-week class beginning Tuesday, July 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Somerville Elks. The class is a program of the New Jersey Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Cost is $15.

Estate Sales: Simplify Your Life. With empty nests, many seniors no longer need the space they required when their children were living at home. Find out more about the benefits of downsizing your home on Monday, July 14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Somerville Elks. Barbara Miller, estate sales organizer, will give an overview of the estate sale process. Free.

Breakfast Out: Choosing Wisely. Learn how to make healthy choices while eating breakfast out on Wednesday, July 23 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the International House of Pancakes in Hillsborough. Registered dietitian Tia Hagins, Somerset Medical Center�s community nutritionist, will provide healthy eating tips. Cost is $8.

Cost-Saving Prescription Options. Concerned about the increasing cost of your prescriptions? Learn how to save money and still meet your medical needs on Wednesday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Somerville Elks. George Harlan, a counselor with the Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), will provide an overview of programs offering prescription assistance and their eligibility requirements. Pharmacist Marsha Durniak, RPh, MBA, will address the risk of medication interactions that could arise from some cost-saving options. Deepa Verma, MD, a family practitioner at Somerset Medical Center, will discuss the misuse of medications due to costs. Free.

News for the Nose. Plagued by a constant stuffy nose or other nasal problems? Take the first step in breathing easier on Wednesday, Aug. 6 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Somerville Elks. Tanveer Janjua, MD, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Somerset Medical Center, will discuss the prevention and treatment of chronic nasal conditions such as sinusitis, snoring, polyps and deviated septums. Free.

Open Communication With Your Adult Children. Relationships with your children change as they grow older and start families of their own. Learn how to strengthen those relationships on Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Somerville Elks. Angela Colva, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker at Somerset Medical Center, will discuss techniques to reduce stress when broaching sensitive issues with your adult children. Free.

Angioplasty: A Life-Saving Procedure. Somerset Medical Center recently received state approval to offer emergency angioplasty services and is seeking to add primary (non-emergency) angioplasty. Jeffrey Taylor, MD, a cardiologist at Somerset Medical Center, will explain how this procedure is used to clear blocked coronary arteries on Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Somerville Elks. Free.

The SAIL program is a free educational and discount program for individuals age 60 and over. Offerings include health education programs, a quarterly senior newsletter, free or discounted health screenings, discounted prescription, vision wear, hearing aid and dental programs, medical center cafeteria discounts, an osteoporosis exercise program, a HealthHike walking program and membership discounts at local fitness clubs.
