The Joys of Grandparenting!
Marian McQuade, a homemaker and senior advocate from West Virginia, understands the joys of grandparenting. In fact, through her efforts 24 years ago, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed Grandparents Day a national holiday.
Today, the tradition continues. Each year on the Sunday after Labor Day, millions of Americans celebrate grandparents and family heritage.
'I have fond memories of playing games with my grandmother and enjoying her company,' says Margrit Bechade, a SAIL member from Somerville. 'Now that I'm a grandmother, I see the rewards of sharing my life with my grandchildren.'
Whether your grandchildren live near or far, there is a special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. Grandparents often serve as companions, friends, advisors and confidants - as well as the official family historians. Traditions are passed on to younger generations and family morals and values are instilled.

This Grandparent's Day falls on Sunday, September 8. In addition to celebrating the joys of grandparenting with your family, join us on Monday, September 9 for 'The Grandparent Connection: How to Relate to Your Grandchildren.'
Sponsored by Somerset Medical Center's ProKIDS program, the event will offer information, resources and fun activities to enhance your relationship with your grandchildren. Attendees are invited to bring grandchildren ages 3 -5 to a concurrent presentation on child safety.
