The new clinical information system at Somerset Medical Center already
has made a difference for many physicians, nurses and employees. In fact, more
than 65 percent of Somerset physicians use the system. The initiative
is benefiting our patients and staff in the following ways:
'The system is extremely helpful when admitting patients, as it allows immediate access to any previous admissions. With less paperwork to process, we now have more time to spend educating patients, assessing their needs and providing assistance.'
- Regina Ciambrone, RN, team leader, Admission Center
'The patient safety features of this system are extraordinary. Not only does the software eliminate handwriting legibility issues, but it provides an extra level of protection against potential drug interactions and other sources of medical errors.'
- David Dyer, chief information officer
'At the Somerset Family Practice Center, all of our computers are now linked to the hospital, which means we always have access to every patient's lab and radiology tests. This reduces phone call for both the hospital and our office, and ensures that we never have a visit where the patient's studies are unavailable.'
- John L. Bucek, MD, director, Somerset Family Medicine Residency Program
'The system has improved my ability to care for patients by providing ready access to old records as well as X-ray reports. In addition, flow sheets and graphics now can be easily used to display the data, enhancing the ability to interpret the information.'
- Ronald G. Nahass, MD
'Phase II of Project Millennium added computerized physician order entry, which is far more than just having physicians enter their orders electronically. Hospitals using it have better quality of care than those without it. Our physicians have all of the clinical information they need in front of them, allowing them to make treatment decisions more quickly and accurately.'
- Lloyd Davis, MD, director of medical informatics
